The collection comprises records of Church Women United for Indianapolis and Indiana from 1916-1998, and is divided into three series. Series 1 contains records of the Indianapolis council and includes minutes, correspondence, financial records, newsletters, scrapbooks and clippings. Series 2 contains correspondence and printed materials collected by Indianapolis council presidents Billie Watkins and Jane Fribley. Series 3 contains mainly records of the Indiana council, and encompasses minutes, newsletters, and other material pertaining to local areas and units throughout Indiana.

The Indiana Council of Church Women was formed circa 1929, and in the early 1930s became part of the Council of Federated Church Women. The name of the organization was changed to the United Church Women circa 1940, and to Church Women United in 1966. The group's activities have included participation in World Day of Prayer, World Community Day, May Fellowship Day, and International Women's Year. The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis formed in 1912 from a federation of forty Protestant churches associated with the Indianapolis Ministerial Association. The executive secretaries and directors have been: Rev. Morton C. Pearson, Charles H. Winders, Ernest Evans, Dr. Howard J. Baumgartel, Lawrence T. Hosie, Rev. Robert S. Koenig, Paul McClure, and Rev. The Indiana Council of Church Women was formed in 1929 as a charitable organization and to promote Christian ecumenism. It joined United Church Women, a national organization, upon its founding in 1941, and became United Church Women in Indiana.
